Hello students,

Our first online lesson is about promises that people usually make for the New Year or any important date they choose.

You can find it in your textbooks on page 82.

PROMISES, PROMISES

First of all, I would like you to write a couple of sentences in which you describe the way we celebrate the New Year in our country. As a help, use the following link, in order to find the new vocabulary https://dictionary.cambridge.org/

Next, please, look at the text on page 82 and complete the exercise 1b and 1c. Write the answers into your notebook as a homework.

The following text is about some promises that people make at the beginning of a new year. Please, read these resolutions and answer the questions into your notebook. 🙂

My New Year’s resolutions

by Darren

I like to start every year with my New Year’s resolutions. Then I read them next 1 January and see how well I did!

Here are my resolutions this year.

1. Get fit!!

I say this every year but I hope writing it in public will make it more real. I’m aiming for three runs a week – I think I can do it! I think a fitness tracking app might help me achieve it. Or I could find a running partner. If anyone who’s reading this wants to be my partner, let me know!

2. Save 10 per cent of my salary a month

Having no savings is starting to worry me and 10 per cent is realistic. It’s not too much, but it’s not too little that I won’t see it add up. I’ll put the money into a special bank account that will make it grow … Actually, I don’t know much about that so maybe my next resolution should be to find out how to invest money!!

3. Cook more

I’d like to start inviting friends for dinner and cooking for them. I think once a month is a good plan. By the end of the year I want to have five dishes I can cook really well so people will say, ‘Have you ever had Darren’s delicious cooking?’ Who wants to be my first guest?

Now, choose among the given words/expressions and write next to the questions.

(save money regularly, learn how to cook five dishes, cook for his friends, study hard, read more find someone to run with, run three times a week, eat healthier food, save enough money to buy something, find a new job)

LESSON II (52)

Grammar: BE +GOING TO

Hello again, dear students

I hope the first lesson wasn’t difficult for you . 🙂

Today we are going to learn some grammar rules about expressing the future. Sometimes, we use expressions to talk about activities we planned before. The expression we use for such cases is : BE + GOING TO + VERB (infinitive form) and is often used to talk about intentions (namjere) ; e.g. I am going to visit my friends next week (,, Namjeravam da posjetim prijatelje sljedeće sedmice.”- u ovakvoj rečenici radnja tek treba da se odigra sljedeće sedmice , ali smo je mi isplanirali ranije)

Here is the full explanation as well as some example sentences.

Remember to change “be” to the correct form for the subject ( I am, you are, he is, she is, we are, you are, they are):

  1. I am going to play tennis tomorrow.
  2. You are going to see your cousin next week.
  3. He / She is going to get married in September.
  4. We are going to have a party this weekend.
  5. They are going to save up for a new car.

Question form

As with all verbs that use the verb “to be”, change the subject and the form of the verb to make questions:

  1. Am I going to…?
  2. Are you going to…?
  3. Is he / she going to…?
  4. Are we going to…?
  5. Are they going to…?

Short replies

  1. Yes I am / No I’m not
  2. Yes you are / No you aren’t (or No you’re not)
  3. Yes he is / No he isn’t
  4. Yes we are / No we aren’t (or No we’re not)
  5. Yes they are / No they aren’t (or No they’re not)

Negative form

  1. I am not going to leave my job.
  2. You aren’t going to visit your cousin this week.
  3. He / She isn’t going to get married.
  4. We aren’t going to move house.
  5. They aren’t going to study at university.

Now, go to page 82 in your textbook and find all the sentences in this form, copy them into your notebook and translate into Serbian. (This is to be done during the lesson)

On page 83, there is a couple of exercises for your homework to be written in your notebooks and sent to me.

I also give you some links where you can practice the expression and check if you understood it well.
